These large scale paintings transform spaces. Fascinating juxtapositions of opposing textures in maximalist patterned landscapes abound. There might be shiny passages of gold leaf traversing across matte rugged concrete, or sequins buried in venetian plaster. They are archeological studies, inspired by the impression of time on everyday urban spaces. Graffiti on a hundred year old underpass wall which has been destroyed and created anew, or a tattered layered silk remnant reimagined as pattern stamped on wax. They are magical to engage with from varying angles, and they transform into an entirely new painting as the light changes throughout the day and night.
Diamond Candy (This Is It)
Diamond Candy (This Is It)
Lines of stenciled text drift like corrupted code from the upper left hand corner of the diptych: This is It. A confusion of plastic beads oozes across the canvas. Their rainbow of colors stands out against a backdrop of grey, slate, pthalo green and umber. Streaked here and there by striated brush marks, spray painted diamonds repeat imperfectly against the textured surface.
